Why the Cradle?

Three million years of family history, under one stretch of Highveld

The dolomite hills north-west of Johannesburg have given up more early human-ancestor fossils than anywhere else on Earth: Mrs Ples, Little Foot, Australopithecus sediba and the astonishing bone chamber of Homo naledi. UNESCO listed the area as a World Heritage Site in 1999.

For visitors it is one of South Africa’s easiest and most rewarding day trips: go underground at Sterkfontein, take the boat ride through time at Maropeng, then add lions, a hot-air balloon or Hartbeespoort Dam. There is no public transport, so this guide focuses on what actually matters — which tour to book, how to drive it yourself, what is open, and where to sleep.

What to see

Caves, fossils, big cats and an ancient mountain range

Sterkfontein and Maropeng are the headline, but the reserves, cultural village and dam on the Cradle’s doorstep turn a morning of fossils into a full day or a weekend.

Visitors inside the Sterkfontein Caves Fossil sites & caves

Sterkfontein Caves

Home of Mrs Ples and Little Foot

The most productive early-hominin site on Earth. Dolomite caves near Krugersdorp where Mrs Ples was blasted out of the rock in 1947 and where the near-complete skeleton of Little Foot lay hidden for millions of years. Guided tours take you underground; the caves reopened in 2025 after a long closure, so check current opening days.

Aerial view of the Tumulus building at Maropeng Fossil sites & caves

Maropeng Visitor Centre

The official visitor centre of the Cradle

Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana. Its grass-covered Tumulus building holds an interactive exhibition on the origins of the Earth and of humankind, entered by an underground boat ride through the elements. The best single stop for families and for understanding the whole World Heritage Site.

Researchers at work underground during the Rising Star expedition Fossil sites & caves

Rising Star Cave & Homo naledi

The discovery that rewrote the textbooks

In 2013 two cavers squeezed into a hidden chamber of the Rising Star system and found the floor littered with bones. They belonged to Homo naledi, a previously unknown human relative, and the haul became the largest collection of hominin fossils ever found in Africa. The cave itself is a working research site, not a visitor attraction — here is how to experience the story.

A lion in the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve Wildlife & culture

Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve and Wonder Cave

A game reserve inside the World Heritage Site

A privately owned reserve of about 1,600 hectares at Kromdraai, in the heart of the Cradle, now trading as the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve. Drive yourself or join a game drive among white rhino, buffalo and antelope, visit the predator camps, then descend into Wonder Cave, an enormous dripstone chamber.

Lion & Safari Park

Big cats on the edge of the Cradle

The successor to Johannesburg’s old Lion Park moved in 2016 to a much larger property near Hartbeespoort, on the R512 at the north-eastern edge of the Cradle. Guided and self-drive routes pass lions, white lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas, with giraffe and antelope roaming a separate area.

Cableway, cruises and weekend markets

“Harties” is Gauteng’s favourite weekend escape, a reservoir pressed against the Magaliesberg about half an hour north of Maropeng. Ride the aerial cableway to the crest of the range, cruise the dam, browse craft markets and visit the elephant and monkey sanctuaries.

Good to know

Visiting the Cradle of Humankind: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is the Cradle of Humankind worth visiting?

Yes. It is one of the most important fossil landscapes in the world and one of the easiest to visit: an hour from Johannesburg, with a guided cave tour, an excellent visitor centre and wildlife parks close by. You can compare the best tours here.

How do you get to the Cradle of Humankind?

By car or on a guided tour. There is no public transport. It is about 50 km north-west of Johannesburg — roughly an hour from Sandton and 70–90 minutes from Pretoria. See our full guide to getting there.

Are the Sterkfontein Caves open?

The caves reopened in April 2025 after a closure of more than two years and are now run by Wits University. Opening days and tour times have changed several times, so check the current status before you go. Details on our Sterkfontein page.

How much time do I need?

A half-day covers Sterkfontein and Maropeng. A full day lets you add the Lion & Safari Park, the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve or Lesedi Cultural Village. A weekend gives you time for a balloon flight and Hartbeespoort Dam as well.

When is the best time to visit?

It is a year-round destination. The dry winter months from May to September bring clear skies and cool days; summer is green and warm with afternoon thunderstorms. See when to go.

Do I need to book in advance?

For guided tours with hotel pickup, yes — at least a day ahead. Cave tours run to a timetable and can sell out at weekends and in school holidays. Most tours on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation, so there is little risk in reserving early.
