Cradle of Humankind Tours

Every sensible way to see the Cradle and the country around it — compared, priced and bookable in a couple of taps.

Because no bus or train goes to the Cradle of Humankind, a guided tour is how most international visitors see it. The good news is that there is plenty of choice, prices are reasonable and almost all tours include hotel pickup in Johannesburg or Sandton.

Below, the tours are grouped by what you want from the day: the fossil sites alone, fossils combined with wildlife or culture, the lion parks and balloon flights nearby, and the best Johannesburg and Pretoria tours to pair with a Cradle day. Everything is booked through GetYourGuide, which means live availability and free cancellation on most options. Prices are indicative “from” starting points in euros per person — tap any card for the live price in your own currency.

A note on the caves: Sterkfontein was closed from late 2022 until April 2025. Some listings still describe alternatives (Maropeng or Wonder Cave) used during the closure. Read the current itinerary on the listing, or message the operator, if going underground at Sterkfontein is essential to you.

Booking questions

Frequently asked questions

Which Cradle of Humankind tour is best value?

The guided half-day with transfers from Johannesburg (around €113, rated 4.8 from nearly 150 reviews) is the best all-rounder. The small-group tour from Sandton or Pretoria starts a little lower, at around €97.

Do tours include entrance fees?

It varies. Some include tickets to Maropeng and the caves, others list them as extras to pay on the day. Each listing has an “includes” section — check it before comparing prices.

Do the tours go into the Sterkfontein Caves?

Most now do again, since the caves reopened in 2025, but it depends on the day of the week and on cave-tour availability. If the cave is your priority, confirm it with the operator when you book.

Can I be picked up in Pretoria?

Yes, on some tours — notably the Pretoria/Sandton small-group tour. Most others pick up only in Johannesburg, Sandton and Rosebank.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Most listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and many let you reserve now and pay later. The exact terms are shown on each tour page before you confirm.
